The American Cut is the culmination of a 6-year research project to advance Legere's Signature Series technology and create a reed that answers the needs of the world’s most discerning jazz musicians. Legere are proud to say the American Cut delivers everything they set out to achieve, and much, much more.

What makes the American Cut so special?

From the very first note, the reed speaks without hesitation. It is effortlessly free-blowing, responsive, colourful, and loaded with personality. The reed’s unmistakable character is thanks to an entirely reinvented profile and heart, and a shorter and wider vamp. By drawing material from the edges toward the centre spine, the reed strikes a harmonious balance of responsiveness and control. Ultra-fine edges allow unrestrained vibration rewarding the player with a clear low-register and vibrant altissimo.

What type of player will enjoy the American Cut?

Jazz players from absolute beginners to renowned masters. The reed’s extremely playable nature, however, ensures that a broad range of artists will adore it, especially those who felt that the Signature reed did not match their tone.

“Let's just say this… I wish I had a reed "exactly" like this one every time I applied it to my mouthpiece! It has the "buzz", the edge, the projection, and the consistency up and down the alto sax." Gerald Albright, American Jazz Saxophonist.

    Légère American cut reed

Posted by Michael Barry on 15th Sep 2023

I've been playing Légère American cut for a while now and they are consistently excellent. A lot of saxophonists say that they prefer the feel of a cane reed in their mouth, and I used to be the same, but now when I play a cane reed it feels too coarse. What's equally impressive is that I ordered this one on Friday and got it the next morning. Great service. Thanks

Great alternative to cane reeds. Consistent and perfect for doubling and an 8 show week

Great reed - over the whole range. Plays 'straight from the box' and long lasting too. Curly's pricing and service is top notch and I will definitely purchase again.

LEGERE TENOR SAXOPHONE REEDS AMERICAN CUT

The reed was too soft but Legere are great with their ‘exchange of strength’ programme so a harder one is coming. My 5 STAR rating is for the time and patience taken over the phone to offer reed and mouthpiece advice to an experienced player, worth so much more than hours spent trawling conflicting opinions on the net. Thank you.

    Legere American cut tenor reed

These really work for me. I know a lot of people don't like the feel of synthetic reeds, bit these have a great tone. The price is right at Curley Woodwind too

    Legere Tenor reed

I thoroughly recommend these reeds, since using an American cut reed on my alto I was so impressed I chose one for my tenor. They are so consistent even with different ambient temperatures and play well through the register and I can hit altissimo notes a lot easier. I was very sceptical about synthetic reeds but the American cut has converted me using them in future. Thanks to Curlywoodwind for a speedy delivery.

    Legere American Cut

Posted by JonF on 2nd Jul 2022

I've tried a number of synthetic reeds before and always gone back to cane. However, after a box of cane reeds with barely any playable, I decided to try the Legere American Cut. It is without doubt the best synthetic reed I've ever played, and easily as good as the best cane reed I've used. Tone is bright but full, and response from the lowest notes to altissimo is excellent. No warming up is required, just stick it on and play. This is what I'll be using from now on.

    Great reeds

I’m a Legere fan. They’re not for everyone admittedly but they work for me. The new American Cut is really nice to play. On a 2 -2 1/2 on either Alto or Tenor there’s plenty of flex if you need it and it’s easy to control. Huge advantage in not pre-wetting and they really do last a long time without any degradation in sound. You still have to look after them as if they were traditional reeds because they will split if you’re careless. Worth trying if you haven’t tried before.
