10:30 - 11:30 PHIL SHOTTON “Advanced Sax Ensemble" - Great Hall, Cornerstone Building

Phil Shotton (Maghull Wind Orchestra, Swingshift Big Band, Northwest Saxophone Choir ...) regularly performs alongside many national and international artists and has appeared at major venues and music festivals throughout the country and abroad.A talented bandleader and conductor, Phil has vast experience in music education as an instrumental teacher, ensemble director, conductor and leader of various workshops and masterclasses.In this workshop for more advanced players (grade 5 onwards), learn and play with Phil, as he puts you through some more tricky arrangements and guides you through some advanced techniques. 10:30 - 11:30 BOB WHITTAKER “Novice Jazz Workshop” - Warehouse Theatre, Cornerstone Building

Bob Whittaker is a Liverpool based saxophonist, band leader and educator. He is a founding member of the contemporary chordless quartet Blind Monk Theory performing at Gateshead International Jazz Festival, Manchester Jazz Festival, Birmingham Mostly Jazz, Marsden Jazz, Lancaster Jazz, Liverpool International Jazz Festival, JATP jazz ... Bob is a SYOS Shape Your Own Sound mouthpiece artist.In this workshop Bob discusses and demonstrates simple effective ways to improvise using shapes over chords, giving you tools to make some interesting phrasing.

Aimed at ALL players, come and join the fun - playing a selection of carefully selected pieces by Phil. He'll be bringing arrangements for all levels, so don't worry if your reading isn't great, just get involved! (remember your music stand)

12:00 – 1:00 DEAN MASSER “Advanced Jazz Workshop” - Warehouse Theatre, Cornerstone Building

After graduating from Leeds College of Music Dean Masser became a member of the Jack Parnell Quartet, which recorded a live album during a week-long stint at Ronnie Scott’s.Dean is now recognised as one of the leading figures in the UK jazz scene regulating performing with stars Alan Barnes, Gilad Atzmon, Tony Kofi ... He has many television and radio appearances to his credit, and released his first album as leader in 2010.During this workshop, Dean de-mystifies a lot of the "theory" and gets you improvising and soloing using some easy but effective methods. A must for all players wanting to improve their jazz soloing!

1:30 – 3:00 SAM HEALEY Sax Workshop & SKELTR performance - Warehouse Theatre, Cornerstone Building

Sam graduated from RNCM in 2012 and has since forged a reputation for being one of the most in demand UK sax artists. He has worked as Soprano Sax for Norway's Ensemble Denada and lead alto for the award winning Beats & Pieces big band. Currently, Sam tours internationally with his duo Skeltr supporting such acts as Marcus Miller (Miles Davis, David Sanborn).In this workshop Sam details and demonstrates:• Working with just drums live (improvising using more rhythm than harmony).• Pushing buttons whilst playing sax (Sam will invite players to play and cue on the computer).• FX pedals and how to use them - microphone technique.• Playing emotionally (when your band are on the computer - you have to bring the emotion)• Q&A on sax in general, Skeltr, getting gigs, practicing, rehearsing.

Sam Healey follows up his workshop with a full Skeltr performance.Having recently toured the UK with LA sensation KNOWER, Skeltr are climbing fast. Their "Spiritual Punk Funk" comes at the audience with sumptuous, technically prolific saxophone solos alongside mysterious samples, synths and loopers for a heart-wrenching and thoughtful cascade of modern soulful funk.Skeltr, known for their unique stage set up and engaging performances, connect to an audience hungry for new and exciting instrumental music. Travelling through Apocalyptic Funk, Spiritual Jazz, emotional ballads and off-world sound manipulation and effects - be prepared for s fresh musical experience!

1:30 – 3:00 FRANK GRIFFITH "Big Band" workshop - Great Hall, Cornerstone Building

As a renowned jazz saxophonist and clarinettist, Frank Griffith has been performing for over 40 years, primarily in New York and London. He has also achieved great acclaim as an arranger, composing for a number of well-known singers and musicians for over 30 years. Living in New York from 1980-95, Frank worked with Ron Carter, Jon Hendricks and Jack McDuff, and played lead alto with the Glenn Miller Orchestra for a nationwide tour in 1984. He has also worked with the orchestras of Toshiko Akiyoshi, Mel Lewis, Buddy Rich and Mel Torme, and recorded with guitarist/singer John Pizzarelli on his CD’s All Of Me and Naturally.More recently Frank has proved himself as a successful educator, teaching in both the USA and UK. Now living in Liverpool, Frank continues to perform across the North West, UK and Europe.In this workshop, Frank invites ALL players to get involved. Get your horn out and join in the fun! He'll have some special arrangements for the day (all levels) and be able to share some great insight and thoughts about big band/ ensemble playing and arranging.(bring your music stand)

A very special workshop with UK sax star Tony Kofi.

  • Winner of the BBC Jazz Awards 2005 -Album of the Year• Winner of the BBC Jazz Awards 2008 – Best Instrumentalist• Winner of the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2005 – Best Ensemble• Nominee, Mobo Awards 2008Tony Kofi has worked/recorded with The World Saxophone Quartet, Courtney Pine, Donald Byrd, Eddie Henderson, The David Murray Big Band, Sam Rivers Big band, Andrew Hill Big Band, Abdullah Ibrahim, Macy Gray, Julian Joseph Big band, Harry Connick JR, Byron Wallen's Indigo, Jamaaladeen Tacuma's Coltrane Configurations and Ornette Coleman.
  • In this interactive workshop Tony discusses and demonstrates his playing, practicing and techniques for you to gain some incredible inspiration from this international star player. He also gives us an intimate insight into his time spent playing and recording with the late sax god Ornette Coleman. Ornette was one of the most influential saxophonists ever, along with Charlie Parker and John Coltrane and we're excited to hear about Tony's experiences and lessons learnt from such a genious of modern music. This workshop will link perfectly to the evening performance where Tony's stellar quartet play the music of Ornette Coleman.
